One of the most common ways that people find themselves trapped in the world of identity theft is through phishing scams. Essentially, if you are not aware of what a phishing scam is, it is technically when a scam artist creates a website that has the entire look, feel and appearance of a common website like Bank of America or eBay. The scam artist then sends out random emails to any number of people much like a fisherman would cast his line out to the fish in an ocean or lake. If you decide to click on the link to the scam artist’s website that is enclosed in the email, you will be required to enter in all of your personal information into a website that, although it resembles the original website, has actually been created for nefarious reasons by a scam artist.
Fortunately enough for most people, even though the number of phishing related scams have been on the rise in the past few years, the amount of software on the market to combat such scams has also greatly increased, meaning that may phishing scams are thwarted before they ever become a problem. The most important tool in your arsenal to avoid phishing scams is to be observant and vigilant. Always check the website that you are going to, especially if it was sent to you in an email. If the website address does not resemble the address of the real site, it is almost always a fake. Also, most modern internet browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 have built in phishing filters that will warn you if you visit a website that is a known phishing scam site. Finally, as a last line of defense, if you have your email spam filter set up properly, it should automatically filter out at least ninety percent of the phishing emails you receive in the first place.
